Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc., Rho Sigma Lambda Chapter, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Oratorical Contest Scholarship
$1,000 awarded to the first place winner of the Oratorical Contest, $750 for second place, $500 for third place; seniors attending an accredited high school in Rockdale, Butts, Clayton, Henry, Newton, or Spalding County are eligible to participate; application due November; contestants must attend mandatory speech development workshop November; Oratorical Contest in December at Shiloh Baptist Church Community Center; Contestants must submit an original speech that is 750 - 1,000 words, 4 minutes and 30 seconds - 7 minutes and 30 seconds when spoken. Awarded to one male student that shows community involvement, proven leadership, and community involvement. Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., Chi Tau Omega Chapter
Awarded to one student from each high school in Rockdale County and Newton County recognizing outstanding high schools seniors that have been accepted to an accredited four-year college or university. Scholarship also awarded in honor of the chapter’s first president, the late Melanie Raiford Griggs. The awards are given to students that have high scholastic achievement, proven leadership, and have actively participated in community service. Aubrae Gunderson Memorial Scholarship
$1,250 each for one male and one female student at Heritage High; $1,000 each for one student (male or female) at RCHS and Salem. Nominations solicited in January; students interviewed and write essay in March; scholarship awarded in May. Student athletes must be nominated by a coach or band director based on subjective leadership and team qualities, letter in two Varsity sports or one sport and marching band, and maintain a minimum of a 3.0 GPA. These were the standards of the fund’s namesake; HHS student Aubrae Gunderson was struck and killed by a car September 26, 2005 while training with the Heritage Cross Country Team. Collins Family Scholarship
$2,000 each to three qualifying seniors/graduates of Rockdale County Public Schools who are of Hispanic/Latino descent, with first preference given to first generation college students. To apply, a student must be of Hispanic/Latino descent, be in good standing to graduate a Rockdale County public school, be accepted to a college or technical school for the next school year, and complete an application, including an essay portion (500 word maximum). Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. Stone Mountain-Lithonia Alumnae Chapter Scholarship
Stone Mountain-Lithonia Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. scholarship application deadline is February. Access the application at . Diego Rincon Memorial Scholarship
$5,000 to one senior from a Rockdale County high school headed to college/technical school; from the Rehorn Family Foundation; named in honor of Diego Rincon, a Class of 2000 Salem High graduate killed in military service in Iraq. Jonathan David Childs Memorial Scholarship
$500 awarded to a senior Salem High football athlete who has been accepted to college and meets the following criteria: Exhibits a passion for football as a player and displays good sportsmanship, minimum 2.5 GPA, displays humility, honesty and integrity, service oriented, demonstrates financial need. Awarded at Salem High's Awards Program; in honor of Coach Jonathan D. Childs who coached and mentored football athletes at Salem High School, Holy Spirit Preparatory School and played football for Georgia State University’s first football team; he was 27 at the time of his passing; Coach Childs possessed a tremendous knowledge of football and the ability to transfer some of that knowledge to his players, and instilled positive character traits and good sportsmanship in his players. Kimberley Chance Atkins Foundation Healthcare Scholarship
$2,000 scholarship to one senior from each Rockdale County traditional high school and Rockdale Career Academy (four seniors altogether) who plan to pursue a career in healthcare; Application due March 13, 2019; scholarship paid directly to college/university; requirements - must be a current Rockdale County resident and student, demonstrated community service in Rockdale County, anticipating completion of a high school diploma at the time of application with a minimum 2.5 GPA, plans to pursue post-secondary education in the healthcare field in an eligible degree or certificate program at an accredited institution. Natural Resources Conservation Workshop
More than $17,000 in college scholarships will be awarded at the Natural Resources Conservation Workshop, a 5-day camp/workshop held in June at Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College in Tifton, Georgia. Ten RCPS students in rising grades 10-12 will be selected to attend the Natural Resources Conservation Workshop free of cost, sponsored by the Conyers and Rockdale Rotary Clubs. The workshop focuses on the value, protection, and conservation of Georgia's wildlife, forestry, soil, and water resources. Newton-Rockdale Optimist Club
$2,500 first place, $1,500 second place, $1,000 third place scholarship awarded. Contestants must not have yet graduated from high school yet or its equivalent and be up to 18 years old as of Dec. 31. The 700-800 word essay is due in January. Rockdale Coalition for Children and Families John K. Morgan Scholarship
$4,000 to the top winner and $500 to the runner-up finalists.  For a student living in Rockdale who has demonstrated outstanding community service in Rockdale County and plans to continue that level of commitment while pursuing post-secondary education. Application includes narrative describing the community service, two letters of recommendation, high school transcript or GED certificate or record of progress towards a GED certificate; due January 31. Rockdale NAACP Freedom Fund Scholarship

Rockdale Retired Educators Association Henry Gibbs Scholarship
Variable amount; for a graduate of a RCPS high school who has completed at least one year of college, and is majoring in education. Applications are available in February from RREA scholarship committee. Applications must be received by March 31. Nominees must provide a transcript of their college grades and demonstrate a definite financial need. Nominations may be made by Rockdale County residents and must be endorsed by a high school counselor. Students may apply for, and be awarded, the scholarship for three years by submitting a new application each year. Snapping Shoals EMC J.E. Robinson Memorial Scholarships
$2,000 each awarded to 14 high school seniors living in homes or attending schools served by Snapping Shoals EMC. Application requires essay, test scores, transcript, three recommendations. Deadline is February. For more information, , 770-385-2888 .

Snapping Shoals EMC All-Around Student Scholarships
$2,000 each awarded to six high school seniors whose homes or high schools are served by Snapping Shoals EMC. These scholarships recognize those students who go above and beyond in their extracurricular activities while still maintaining high academic standards. Snapping Shoals EMC Washington Youth Tour Scholarships

Springfield Baptist Church Academic Scholarships
$800 each awarded to 18 high school seniors from the traditional high schools in Rockdale County, Newton County, and surrounding counties. Applicants do not need to be a member of Springfield Baptist Church to apply; open to the community. Applicants must be accepted and enrolled as a full-time student at a two-year or four-year post-secondary institution. Application requires essay, transcript (3.0 GPA or higher), demonstrated spiritual leadership qualities and documented community service experience, letter recommendation from teacher or staff member of their current school and letter of recommendation from a personal reference (such as a mentor, clergy, family friend, etc), and their college acceptance letter. Superintendent's Scholarship
$1,000 to one senior at each of the three RCPS high schools and Rockdale Magnet School for Science and Technology; sponsored by the Foundation for Excellence in Education and The Grace and James McGarity Scholarship Fund. To apply, a student must: be a graduate this school year in a Rockdale County public school, have been admitted to a college or technical school for the upcoming school year, not have received over $2500 in scholarships from other sources, and complete an application, including the essay portion. Three judges read and score the essays. The applicant with the highest cumulative score from each school is chosen to receive this scholarship. Willie Henderson Sr. Memorial Scholarship
$1,000 each awarded to one senior from each of Rockdale’s three main high schools, chosen by school counselors, who demonstrates academic and character excellence and community promise; awarded in June at the annual fundraising musical at Macedonia Baptist Church in honor of the late community leader Willie Henderson Sr., first president of the JP Carr School PTA who helped guide school integration in Rockdale. Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc., Phi Omicron Zeta Chapter Scholarship
$500 non-renewable scholarships awarded based on merit, financial need, and available funding to graduating high school seniors enrolled in Newton and Rockdale counties high schools and planning to attend an accredited college or university. Constitutional Officers Association of Georgia Scholarship
Three scholarships given: $1,500, $1,000 and $500 awarded in May to undergraduate students as well as graduating high school seniors. Application deadline April. The student must be a Georgia resident and attend a Georgia school. For more information, go to or call 404-377-1364. 

Edgar Wood Memorial Scholarship

Elks Most Valuable Student Scholarships
Four-year scholarships awarded to 500 students nation-wide, ranging from $1,000 - $12,500 per year; any high school senior who is a US Citizen is eligible; Applicants will be judged on scholarship, leadership, and financial need. Georgia United Credit Union Vernon E. Carne Scholarship
$3,000 first place, $2,000 second place, $1,000 third place. Top eight Runners-Up: $500 each. Applicants (or their parents) must be a member of Georgia United Credit Union (formerly Georgia Federal Credit Union); must be a high school student classified as a senior entering a college/university or technical school by fall after graduation. Georgia Farm Bureau
Total $14,250 in scholarships to 10 high school seniors who plan to pursue a college degree in agriculture, family and consumer sciences or a related field. The top three students will each receive a scholarship of $3,000. The remaining seven students will each receive a $750 scholarship. Students are eligible to submit an application if they, a parent or a legal guardian are a member of Georgia Farm Bureau. Applicants must plan to enter a unit of the University System of Georgia or Berry College during the academic year after graduation to pursue an undergraduate degree in agricultural and environmental sciences, family and consumer sciences or a related agricultural field. GE-Reagan Foundation Scholarship Programs
$10,000 renewable scholarships awarded to eligible seniors; must demonstrate at school, at the workplace, and within the community the attributes of leadership, drive, integrity, and citizenship; demonstrate strong academic performance (minimum 3.0 grade point average/4.0 scale or equivalent); be U.S. citizens; Application due early January; more information at

InspirASIAN Scholarship
$1,000 or $2,000; 43 scholarships awarded to students graduating high school in Georgia; open to all nationalities/ethnicities. Julian and Jan Hester Memorial Scholarship
Four one-time $1,000 scholarships awarded to seniors based on academic merit. Open to seniors across Georgia. To compete, students must be sponsored by a local community bank that is a member of the Community Bankers Association (list of member banks at, must complete an activity record expressing their leadership activity in school, write a short essay on community banking, provide teacher recommendations and an official high school transcript. Walter Harrison Scholarship
$1,000 scholarships to high school seniors and undergraduate students attending any technical school or two- or four-year accredited college or university in Georgia. To apply for the Walter Harrison Scholarship through Snapping Shoals, you must reside in the household of, or be, a Snapping Shoals EMC consumer-member (electric customer) or employee. Vegetarian Resource Group Scholarship
One $10,000 scholarship and two $5,000 scholarships awarded to graduating U.S. high school seniors who have promoted vegetarianism in their schools and/or communities. Vegetarians do not eat meat, fish, or fowl. Applicants will be judged on having shown compassion, courage, and a strong commitment to promoting a peaceful world through a vegetarian diet/lifestyle. VFW Patriot’s Pen and Voice of Democracy contest
The VFW Post 5290 Voice of Democracy speech contest for high schoolers and Patriot’s Pen essay contest for middle schoolers gives students a shot at monetary prizes on the state and national level; a $30,000 scholarship goes to the national VOD winner. VOD competitors must write and record a three to five minute essay on a theme on an audio cassette tape or audio CD.  PP competitors must write a 300-400 word essay on a theme. Both due November.
