Update (9/10/20)

High school sports conditioning to resume
CLICK HERE  - RCPS Superintendent Dr. Terry Oatts announced the decision to resume high school fall sports conditioning. “After consulting our Fall Sports Working Group, I have decided to permit the resumption of fall sports conditioning on Monday, September 14, 2020," said Dr. Oatts. "This decision will afford our fall sports student-athletes the opportunity for structured and supervised conditioning in preparation for eventual fall sports competition during second semester. We will continue to monitor our local, regional and statewide COVID-19 data to inform our decisions regarding fall sports. While our local data is improving somewhat, key indicators such as positivity rate and 14-day case rates warrant further monitoring and scrutiny. Our goal remains to let our student-athletes compete as soon as it is reasonably safe to do so.”

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS FOR FALL SPORTS POSTPONEMENT TO SECOND SEMESTER

Q: Why was the decision made to postpone fall sports to second semester?
A: The decision was made that the current COVID-19 pandemic poses too much risk to the safety and well-being of our student-athletes and coaches. Currently, the positivity rate for Rockdale County remains high at nearly 13% while the 14-day case count is currently increasing.

Q: Is Rockdale County Public Schools the only district that has postponed fall sports?

A: Several other districts and some schools have either temporarily halted or canceled fall sports for various reasons. RCPS is the first district to postpone fall sports to second semester. There are several other metropolitan Atlanta districts that have expressed an interest in potentially participating with RCPS in a postponed fall sports season.

Q: How will this postponement impact the fall sports schedule?
A: Our District Athletic Director would coordinate with the other interested districts on crafting a second semester fall sports competition schedule to ensure a full competitive fall sports season.

Q: Would our fall sports teams be able to potentially compete in state playoff/championship matchups?

A: Competing in state playoff/championship games may not be possible due to the nature of the reworked second semester fall sports competition schedule, but students would be able to have a full competitive fall sports season.

Q: How will student-athletes maintain their competitive edge and fitness with the postponement of fall sports to second semester?
A: Coaches will have the ability to communicate with student-athletes by virtual means only in regard to pre-season conditioning. Student-athletes are encouraged to continue to engage in a reasonable and safe exercise regimen (e.g. aerobic and/or anaerobic exercises based upon your specific sport, individual health/wellness profile and level of athleticism – beginning/intermediate/advanced)

Q: How will this postponement to second semester potentially impact multi-sports athletes?

A: The proposed second semester fall sports schedule will be developed with the goal of minimizing conflicts for multi-sports student-athletes, though there may be some unavoidable conflicts.

Q: Will winter sport seasons (basketball, wrestling, swimming, and flag football) be conducted under the current GHSA calendar?
A: We will continue to monitor the impact of COVID-19 on our local community and make appropriate decisions regarding the winter sports competitive season.
