Dual Enrollment (DE) is a dual-credit program that allows high school students (11th and 12th and some 10th) the option of pursuing college credit through approved colleges and universities-- either as a full- or part-time college student. Students who successfully complete an approved academic course from the state’s DE course list earn both high school and college credits. Students must apply and be accepted to a participating eligible postsecondary institution. College approved courses taken must count toward high school graduation requirements. The program pays for college tuition, books, and mandatory fees.

WHAT IS DUAL ENROLLMENT?
A program that allows eligible high school students to earn college credit while also working towards their high school diploma.
Dual Enrollment credits count as both high school credits and college credits.
Academic and technical courses are available.
Dual Enrollment is offered through most public, private, and technical colleges and universities in Georgia.

WHO IS ELIGIBLE TO PARTICIPATE IN DUAL ENROLLMENT?
11th and 12th graders – must meet college admission requirements to take any approved Dual Enrollment courses at an eligible public, private or technical institution
10th graders – may enroll in Career/Technical/Agricultural Education (CTAE) courses only at a participating technical college
**High achieving 10th graders with an SAT score of 1200 or an ACT score of 26 may enroll in any approved Dual Enrollment courses at a participating college or university by meeting college admission requirements.
9th graders – are ineligible for funded Dual Enrollment.

WHAT COSTS ARE COVERED BY DUAL ENROLLMENT?
Tuition,
Mandatory Fees,
Textbooks,
***Rarely, some courses may have additional fees outside of mandatory college fees, such as lab fees, that are not covered by Dual Enrollment.

DUAL ENROLLMENT FUNDING
The Dual Enrollment Funding Cap is 30 semester hours or 45 quarter hours.
The Funding Cap cannot be exceeded, except under special circumstances with career/technical courses.
Any Dual Enrollment credits hours taken beyond the funding cap must be self-funded by the student.
There is no funding for repeat or failed Dual Enrollment classes.
Students and parents must complete the Dual Enrollment Funding application on www.gafutures.org.

HOW DO DUAL ENROLLMENT GRADES AND CREDITS WORK?
Final grades in Dual Enrollment courses count for college and high school credit, and thus appear on the high school transcript and the college transcript.
Most college courses count as a full high school credit (1.0) for one semester/quarter as opposed to a .5 credit that high school courses receive.
Dual Enrollment courses are weighted at an extra .5 in GPA calculation for HOPE GPA.
College issued final letter grades will be converted to numerical grades for the high school transcript: A=95, B=85, C=77, D=P, F=60, W=Z, WF=60
Students must maintain Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) at the college to continue in Dual Enrollment courses.
Dual Enrollment courses meet the Academic Rigor requirement for HOPE Scholarship.

BENEFITS OF DUAL ENROLLMENT
Increases exposure to college-level classes while still in high school.
Allows students with specific goals (academic or career) greater flexibility to attain those goals.
Allows an opportunity to explore careers with technical classes.
May assist in providing an easier transition from high school to college.
Reduces the cost to the student and/or family.
Offers expanded course offerings.
Courses receive extra weight on final grades.
Courses are worth a full credit per semester/quarter so students can accumulate more credits.

ARE YOU READY FOR DUAL ENROLLMENT?
Are you self-motivated and able to manage stress positively?
Are you proactive in completing assignments and studying and have good time management skills?
Are you diligent in attending class?
Are you able to communicate with your teachers independently of your parent?
Do you meet deadlines and avoid procrastination?
Are you able to maintain good grades while being involved in extracurricular activities?

FOR YOUR CONSIDERATION:
Courses are going to be taught at a college level and students must be prepared.
Instructors will only communicate with the student. There will be not be communication with parents.
Parents will not have access to student grades.
Because the courses are worth a full credit, good grades are a great GPA booster but poor grades are harmful to a GPA.
Credit transfer is not a guarantee – you must do your research.
Competitive colleges may not consider DE as rigorous as AP. Again, research is a must.

DUAL ENROLLMENT CAREER/TECHNICAL COURSES: OPTION A OR OPTION B
Students can take DE career/technical courses, beyond what we offer at RCA, at the technical college campus.
There are other Option B programs offered at GPTC and other technical colleges beyond the two programs we offer at RCA.
We will beholding a special virtual DE Information Night with Georgia Piedmont Technical College to highlight career/technical programs and options on Tuesday, November 30, 2021, 6:30–8:00 p.m. (link will be posted at www.rockdaleschools.org/de). We will highlight the relationship between these programs and employment opportunities in our community and beyond.
