Rockdale County Public Schools (RCPS) provides Hospital Homebound (HHB) Services as a short-term instructional support for students who are unable to attend school due to a medical condition. The goal of the program is to ensure that students can continue their education and remain connected to their school community while recovering from illness, injury, or treatment.

Purpose of Hospital Homebound Services

HHB services are designed to prevent academic regression and promote continuity of instruction during a student’s medical absence. These services are provided in accordance with state guidelines and require medical documentation from a licensed physician verifying that the student must remain at home or in a hospital setting for a minimum of ten (10) consecutive school days.

Eligibility

To qualify for HHB services, students must:

  • Be enrolled in a Rockdale County Public School.

  • Have a medical need(s) that restricts them from attending school for at least ten (10) consecutive school days or intermittent periods of time due to ongoing treatment.

  • Have medical documentation completed and signed by a licensed physician.

  • Receive approval through the RCPS Department of Learning Support.

Service Delivery

Once eligibility is approved, a certified teacher provides instruction aligned with the student’s current classroom curriculum. Services may be delivered:

  • In the home or hospital setting;

  • Virtually, when appropriate and approved; or

  • Through coordination with classroom teachers to ensure continuity in assignments, assessments, and course credit.

The amount and type of instruction provided are based on the student’s medical condition, stamina, and grade level, in accordance with Georgia Department of Education (GaDOE) HHB guidelines.

Transition Back to School

When the student’s physician determines that the student is ready to return, the HHB teacher and school team coordinate a smooth transition back to the regular school setting. The goal is to support the student’s academic, social, and emotional reintegration into the school environment.

Our Commitment

RCPS is committed to supporting every student’s right to an education, even during times of medical hardship. Through Hospital Homebound Services, we ensure that all students have access to instruction and the opportunity to continue progressing toward their educational goals.
