RCPS Student Support Resources
Our Hearts and Thoughts are with Apalachee HighSeptember 4, 2024

Good afternoon RCPS Families,

By now you may be aware of the incident at Apalachee High School in Barrow County that continues to unfold. First, our thoughts and prayers are with the Apalachee students, staff, and school community during this time. We do not have any information outside of what is being reported publicly through news outlets.

We understand that our students and families may feel anxious or concerned when a safety incident at any school is reported publicly and seen across social media. Our school social workers, counselors, and other support staff are available for students who may need extra support. Please also find resources to use at home with your children using the links below.

Rockdale County Public Schools keeps safety our highest priority and has implemented a multi-measure approach to safety with many enhancements over the last few years. The OpenGate® weapons detection system, the EPIC Crisis Alert System™, additional safety personnel and School Resource Officers (SROs), upgraded and increased surveillance cameras, clear bookbags for students, safety vestibules and controlled access at every school, law enforcement access to digital floor plans and surveillance systems, and continued safety training and drills are some of the measures.

The district and schools also promote “See or Hear Something, Say Something” among parents/guardians, students, and staff and encourage everyone to speak up!

Again, our hearts and thoughts remain with the Barrow County community at this time.
