Conyers, Ga. – The Georgia Department of Education recently released the Georgia Milestones Math scores for the 2023-24 school year. Rockdale County Public Schools (RCPS) increased in all grades in the Developing and above learner levels on the Milestones End of Grade (EOG) math assessment and the high school algebra End of Course (EOC) assessment. In addition, scores in the Proficient and above learner levels increased in grades 4, 5, 7,8, and both the 8th grade and high school algebra EOC. The math assessments were updated to align with the new K-12 Mathematics Standards first implemented during the 2023-24 school year. Results for ELA, science, and social studies were released in July.
“I am proud of our teachers for their hard work in transitioning to the new math standards and ensuring our students continue to show improvement in mathematics,” said Superintendent Dr. Terry Oatts. “We still have work to do in the subject area of mathematics, but we are pleased that at every grade we moved more students out of the Beginning Learner level over the previous year, which shows more students are demonstrating increased proficiency in their math skills and understanding. I am particularly proud of our 8th grade students who made double digit improvements in both the Developing and above and Proficient and above learner levels on the math EOG and the high school algebra EOC for Carnegie credit. Eighth grade is considered a critical gateway grade for mathematics preparing students for the more rigorous high school mathematics curriculum.”
“I appreciate our faculty and staff who embraced the new math standards in such a way that our students benefitted from their hard work,” said Rockdale County Board of Education Chairwoman Pam Brown. “We realize that changes in curriculum often result in a decrease in test scores in the beginning, so we will celebrate our improvements and continue the work of bringing all students to the next level.”
About Georgia Milestones
Students take Georgia Milestones End of Grade (EOG) tests in grades three through eight, and Georgia Milestones End of Course (EOC) tests in identified high school courses. The Georgia Milestones assessment system meets the federal requirement that states test students in math and ELA in grades 3-8 and once in high school, and in science once per grade band (3-5, 6-8, 9-12).
Georgia Milestones assesses student learning along four levels of achievement:
Beginning Learners do not yet demonstrate proficiency in the knowledge and skills necessary at this grade level/course of learning, as specified in Georgia’s content standards. The students need substantial academic support to be prepared for the next grade level or course and to be on track for college and career readiness.
Developing Learners demonstrate partial proficiency in the knowledge and skills necessary at this grade level/course of learning, as specified by Georgia’s content standards. The students need additional academic support to ensure success in the next grade level or course and to be on track for college and career readiness.
Proficient Learners demonstrate proficiency in the knowledge and skills necessary at this grade level/course of learning, as specified in Georgia’s content standards. The students are prepared for the next grade level or course and are on track for college and career readiness.
Distinguished Learners demonstrate advanced proficiency in the knowledge and skills necessary at this grade level/course of learning, as specified in Georgia’s content standards. The students are well prepared for the next grade level or course and are well prepared for college and career readiness.
