Representatives from 124 school boards in Georgia met June 8-9, 2018 for the GSBA Summer Conference and Delegate Assembly in Savannah to elect GSBA’s officers and approve the legislative positions of the association.

“We congratulate Katrina Young on being installed as the 2018-2019 President of the Georgia School Boards Association,” says Jim McBrayer, Chairman of the Rockdale County Board of Education. “Mrs. Young has served many years advocating for public education so that all children in Georgia are prepared for college and careers. We are proud to have Mrs. Young represent Rockdale County and all of Georgia in her new role.”

“I am grateful for the opportunity to serve as GSBA President,” says Young. “I will represent this membership with the highest level of integrity, at the local and national levels. And, know that above everything else, I will always advocate with passion on behalf of the 1.7 million students attending our public schools.”

Young, who was first elected to the Rockdale County Board of Education in 2006, has served as GSBA Vice President for 2016-2017 and GSBA District 4 Director for two previous terms, representing Rockdale, Newton, DeKalb and Decatur City school systems. She serves on various committees at GSBA including the Executive Committee, Strategic Planning Committee, Georgia Vision Project Steering Committee, Governmental Operations Committee, Recognition Committee, as a Risk Management Fund Trustee, and as a National School Boards Association delegate.

For the upcoming year, Katrina Young was installed as President. Frank Griffin, Chair of the Lee County school board, was installed as President-Elect. Patricia Hugley-Green of the Muscogee County school board was installed as Vice President. Ron Hopkins, Chair of the Jefferson City school board, continues his three-year term as Treasurer.

Prior to the conference, hundreds of school board members convened in Savannah to fulfill their annual training requirements as outlined in Georgia law. GSBA offered four workshops to allow board members to receive training: New Board Member Orientation, Policy, Rewriting the Rules for Student Success and Community Enrichment, and True Community Engagement.
